Are Soybean Export Projections too small?

10/31/2014

The US soybean balance sheet is becoming more interesting given the incredible pace of export sales over the past two months.  Since the export sales report for the week ended September 4th, we have sold a total of 456 million bushels of soybeans for the current marketing year.  As usual, it’s all about China; they have single handedly purchased 758,896,732 bushels of the known destination sales.  And, the fact of the matter is that most if not all of the unknown destinations are also bound for Chinese ports.  Add those in and their total purchases are 982,215,348 bushels or, nearly 80% of US sales.

What does this mean for US soybeans?  At the present pace, in order to meet USDA export projection of 1.7 billion bushels for the 2014/15 marketing year, we only need to average 715,729.7 MT per week until the end of February.  And, since there is generally some carryover into March and beyond before the South American crop takes over, weekly average sales will likely need to be even lower than that.

The bottom line is that it wouldn’t be surprising to see a revision in future WASDE reports if we continue to sell beans at our current rate.  The soybean balance sheet seems to present a conundrum every year for USDA statisticians, in our opinion this year is shaping up to be no different.  Despite the huge production, it is conceivable that the current 450 million bushel ending stocks figure is actually, too big.

Managing Counter Party Risk with Bushel

10/22/2014

One of the most common concerns merchants have regarding doing business via an online cash grain trading marketplace is the risk associated in trading with new or unknown parties.  It's a valid concern; after all, we're in the business of risk management and getting stiffed on a payment can sink a year's profit.  Fortunately with bushel, managing this risk couldn't be simpler.  There are several ways that Bushel makes it easy to mitigate counter party risk while simultaneously expanding market access.

First and foremost its important to recognize that Bushel is not simply an auction site with bids and offers coming in from anonymous sources.  Though the dynamic bid platform is an important part of the Bushel strategy, the site is much more than that.  Merchants are always in control over who they trade with.  If you've posted a lot and a bid comes in from somebody you don't want to do business with, you have the ability to simply reject the bid.  That's not to say that the entire market will know who is bidding on a specific lot; only the seller can see that.  So, there is still a degree of market anonymity, but buyer and seller are aware of who they are trading with.

Second, with Bushel, you will soon have the ability to build your own network of preferred, trusted trading partners.  Want to post a lot that only your network can see?  No problem.  We understand that sometimes you don't want to broadcast an offer to the entire marketplace.  Bushel makes it easy to do business the way you want to do it.

Finally, any  trades made via the Bushel site will be subject to counter party credit approval.  Once a bid or an offer is accepted a disclaimer will pop up to that effect.  Once a price is agreed upon, merchants with the two companies will simply exchange company information and both credit departments will make the determination on approval or dis-approval of the counter party's worthiness.  Its that simple.

Managing counter party risk with Bushel is probably not too much different than you're accustomed to in doing business over the phone.  Still, we're always looking for ways to improve.  In the future, we are excited about several new tools that traders will be able to use to improve market transparency and liquidity via Bushel, including the ability to purchase trade guarantees from financial institutions.  Stay tuned!

Bushel Direct, LLC Announces Release Of The First Real-Time Online Cash Grain Trading Platform.

Vancouver, Wa- Busheldirect, LLC announced today the release of the very first online cash grain trading platform designed for commercial grain handlers. The proprietary system will allow merchandisers across the U.S. to buy and sell physical grain in a convenient and transparent way.  Based on the latest technology, Bushel Direct's system allows the industry to trade in real-time via PC, Tablet, or Smartphone.

Company officials say that Bushel will serve to create new opportunities for elevators by broadcasting bids and offers to a much wider marketplace than many merchants are presently engaged in. "It's a big time saver," said Bushel Direct Chief Creative Officer Joel Schulbach. "Merchants can't be on the phone with every player in the marketplace at once. This system allows users to trade with anyone, anytime, anywhere. Price discovery has never been easier."

In addition to providing a transparent price discovery platform, Busheldirect will also have the ability to compile and disseminate vast amounts of price data. "As trading is conducted through Bushel, information that was previously unknown to a huge segment of the marketplace will be available to merchants. What did December shipment hard red winter wheat trade at in June of last year in Los Angeles?" Schulbach asked, "As of now, no one knows with any certainty. Going forward however, we will be able to compile that data and make the aggregate market pricing available to our members while maintaining their private information."

It's not just about price. "Market access is a huge benefit of this platform. No grain merchant has the time to be in constant contact with each and every market for their grain. Bushel now allows users to simultaneously engage traders in markets all across the country," said Schulbach.
